If so, you would know exactly where we spent our day off!
That’s right; it’s Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach on the Oregon Coast! I might be dating myself, but I have always considered myself a Goonie. If you have no idea what I am talking about -go watch, this movie from 1985! You will then learn- that Haystack Rock is a clue to find One Eyed Willy’s gold! One of my favorite films from childhood.
Mitch and I were so excited to take the Super Nanny and Mace to this very special place, as a bonus we were surprised to find out that the entire beach is a leash free dog beach. Pure Doggie Bliss, for Jetson- and his best friend Seamus, who also came along for the day. The furry boys were able to run to their hearts content!
I was able to play with my lensbaby a little more… the next two pictures were my favorite of the day!
Seamus is a beautiful, FAST whippet! It was so nice to catch him in a moment of stillness.
My guys were so patient while I got lost with my camera; they had no idea I zoomed in with my telephoto lens. If I had to guess, Mitch was probably teaching Mace about something complicated and wonderful, like Quantum Physics.
Just 30 miles from Cannon Beach is a small town called Astoria, since it was “THE” town in the movie Goonies, we decided to add it to our trip. It was so dark and dreary I thought it looked more interesting to shoot a few pictures in black and white. Even though it was gloomy I felt very warm and dreamy roaming around town. Everyone was so friendly and it had a creative vibe to the city.

Fort George Brewery is a great place to stop for a bite and a beer. Mitch ordered a sampler and loved the Emerald Pearl Brew made with green tea.
I loved the chalk art menu
One thing I think I have gotten into the habit of doing while we have been traveling, is to city shop. I always ask myself, could I live here? Would I be happy here? Would Mace and Mitch be happy here? Is there enough creativity and progressive thinking for us here? What is the art scene like? Can I get Organic Veggies and Grass Fed Beef here? And although, we have been and lived in so many cities, my list is short. Astoria might be cool enough to add to that list! I liked it!
Love your pictures and that lensbaby is really cool. I wish I could get some knew lenses for Jon. I can’t even imagine how great your photos will be after your photo lesson. MIss you guys!
Charmian
Thanks, Charmian! We miss you guys! Looking so forward to Feb 2013! Check your facebook, sending you a note!
I roamed these same places back in the early 70′s and still have a place in my heart for Haystack/Cannon. Wish that I had stayed, as the east coast cannot compare to the magnificent Pacific Northwest. Too bad property taxes are unaffordable now in Oregon.
I know, I have been looking at the rates here, Expensive and really is beautiful! Bummer!
Loved this post! My daughter lives in Portland and we went to this beach a few summers ago but the Haystack was shrouded in fog. *sniff* I too “shop for cities” when I travel (mainly because I do not like where I live now) but the whole rainy thing in Portland is such a downer for me. I find my self saying, “Portland, I want to love you! Please stop raining!” I am really cheered reading your take on it because in every other way it feels like the perfect fit for me. Ever read Richard Florida’s “Who’s Your City?” Great book about the importance of where you live to your personal happiness. Thanks for this blog. It is one great find!
It rained all day yesterday..not the just a little rain here and there but, Rain all day! Mostly I don’t mind it, but after 3 weeks, it is becoming a bit much! I really have to remind myself that I love to leave the couch and get out and about. It seems almost every city has a But- San Diego, Amazing- Too Expensive! LA, Amazing-Too much Traffic! Honolulu Amazing! Too Far! I am excited to read “Who’s Your City” I think I will love it! Thanks for that..also I am very excited to meet you, Love Love love your blog! If your daughter comes to the show make sure to contact me for a backstage tour!
We play that game too! We have moved many times in our travels……too many places..so little time. We plan to live as you and your family do some day……a month here….a half year there. Life is too short. Loved your pictures!
Do you guys travel much overseas? I have a friend traveling all over the World with Cirque du Soleil and she is in a different country every month. I wish she would start a blog, she has a lot of great stories! So little time, I agree!
Loving your photos – thanks for sharing:) Have a Great Weekend!
I will you do the same, any adventures planned?

must be an amazing life, living the way you do, always on the move. must also be quite tiring sometimes, maybe ?
loved the Goonies too, such a fun and amazing film from our young years.
Yes! I am a Goonie! I loved this film when I was a kid and I love watching it with my son even though I’m in my 30′s. What a lovely blog you have. Am very envious of your travelling. Great photos as well. I have just started a photography course so quite interested in learning new techniques and I love some of the effects you’ve acheived
